Bark beetles strike area's pine trees
Bark beetles are killing pines in the region, with needles turning yellow or brown and trees dying once infestation begins. Experts from the Texas Forest Service note beetles burrow under bark, feed and lay eggs, with exit holes the size of pencil tips enabling fungi and ants to attack. Identified types include Ips, black turpentine, and Southern pine beetle. Texas AgriLife Extension Agent Tyler Fitzgerald references local observations.
