Baytown backs EPA plan to fully remediate San Jacinto pits
Baytown City Council endorses the EPA recommendation to remove 202000 cubic yards of contaminated material from the San Jacinto River Waste Pits at an estimated 96.9 million dollars. The northern site spans 14 acres with 152000 cubic yards removed, the southern 20 acres with 50000 cubic yards. The pits lie on the river’s western bank near I 10 between Channelview and Highlands, previously used by Champion Paper mill and containing mercury PCBs and dioxin. Local leaders note regional responsibility and urge full remediation despite some opposition favoring capping.
