Stocks Rise Modestly as Earnings Outlook Buoys Sentiment
Wall Street edged higher as 3M earnings beat, easing investor disappointment in a slowing economy. The Dow gained 56.15 points to 9777.94, Nasdaq up 12.78, and S&P 500 up 5.36 as leading indicators fell 0.2 percent in September. Major names due this week include AT&T, DuPont, Eastman Kodak, JP Morgan Chase, McDonald’s, Microsoft, and Merck. Lexmark climbed 6.75 to 74.00 after a solid Q3. 3M rose 1.43 to 75.48 amid stronger sales and cost cuts.
