Baytown Council honors staff and startup of civic projects
The Baytown City Council recognized long serving staff including Iler for 20 years and Gooding for five, named Harold Cheek as September Employee of the Month, and praised the Streets Division Team for a Bicentennial Park walking trail project. Librarian Lesley Washburn was named 2008-2009 Employee of the Year and Camp Ike Team won 2008-2009 Team of the Year for Ike hurricane response. The council declared October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month and held public hearings on annexation and Exxon Mobil disannexation with no public comments. It approved interlocal North Main Street improvements, a 2009 Mill and Overlay Change Order, a water meter ordinance, energy performance payoff to Johnson Controls, and Bayer Material Science Enterprise Zone nomination.

Multiple Baytown thefts and vandalism reported over weekend
Police said a car was spray painted UR MOM in the 200 block of Pin Oak Drive with $500 damage. A trailer with a four wheel recreational vehicle and two jet skis was stolen from the 700 block of Bowie Street, valued at more than $23,000. A window air conditioner was stolen from a vacant Arbor Street apartment. A Logans Pointe break in on Garth Road yielded about $1,700 in furniture. Baytown police logged 25 offenses from Sunday to Monday, including two assaults and nine miscellaneous cases.

Colorado father calls balloon saga convoluted
A Colorado dad accused of staging a publicity stunt by reporting his 6-year-old son was aboard an escaped balloon says the tale has become convoluted. Richard Heene, speaking to the AP, says he is seeking counsel as he and wife Mayumi faced sheriff statements at the Larimer County station noting the reports were a hoax. Tears appeared as Heene described the situation growing increasingly tangled.
