Highway numbering system created in 1957
The U S highway grid was devised in 1957 by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials and the Bureau of Public Roads. Eisenhower supported the plan, assigning one or two digit numbers to major routes and three digits to connectors. North south routes take odd numbers and rise west to east, while east west routes use even numbers rising from south to north.
