Shelters cleared as Katrina evacuee housing effort continues
About 14,468 hurricane evacuees remain in shelters nationwide, with 9,003 in Louisiana. FEMA cites land, permit, and Rita disruptions while critics cite hotel costs and slow housing moves. Local officials urge quicker moves to permanent or temporary housing and note venue losses from shelter use.

Barbers Hill bond plan outlined with growth in mind
The district previews Proposition 2 at 2.4 million for renovations to the field house and livestock facilities, plus a practice track and football field upgrades. Growth projections place Barbers Hill as the ninth fastest growing in Texas, with expected 1,600 more students over five years. Tax impact estimated at 2.2 to 2.3 percent in 2006, plus smaller increases in 2007 and 2008. Voters previously approved a 1998 45 million bond for a new high school campus, and the district has seldom faced bond denials.
