Judge Rules Liston Clay Fight A Legal Exhibition

U S Circuit Court of Appeals judge in New Orleans ruled the February 25 1964 heavyweight title bout between Cassius Clay and Sonny Liston in Miami Beach was an exhibition rather than a pugilistic fight. InterContinental Promotions had guaranteed 600000 for rights but drew 225000 at the box office. Liston claimed a left shoulder injury and gave up the title on the stool before the seventh round. The ruling cited 1895 Florida law banning prize fighting unless charity sponsored, with the judge noting the last true pugilistic fight in 1889 between Sullivan and Kilrain.
