Mormon church marks 50th anniversary in Baytown
Baytown marked the 50th anniversary of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the area with a barbecue and slideshow. Since the 1953 start at Pruett Street, the congregation grew from 150 to more than five times that size, led by roughly 15 bishops over the years. The current bishop is Brent Brunson, whose great uncle Howard Brunson was the first Baytown bishop. The church moved to 1010 Birdsong Drive in 1980 after leaving its original building opposite Lamar Elementary. Melanie Ferguson notes the community spirit remains the church’s constant.
