Heater Havoc in Modern Cars and Manuals
A reader laments complex heater controls in new cars and the tangled manual. After repeated knob fiddling and glove box guidance, the system mixed heat and air conditioning. Frustration peaks as simple labeled switches seem absent, ending with a plea for straightforward controls and a workaday radio switch.

Lift Span Bridge Planned Over Cedar Bayou for U S Steel Site
Missouri Pacific Railroad shifted its Cedar Bayou crossing plan from a stationary span to a lift type bridge for the U S Steel mill site. The ~100 foot long structure would provide about 50 feet of clearance and may replace a fixed span to ease grading costs. Protests by Baytown and Chambers County were filed, with Chambers County Commissioners opposing fixed spans. The proposal will go to the Secretary of the Army for disposition.

Firms Protesting Mopac Bridge May Withdraw
At least two companies that protested the Missouri Pacific bridge over Cedar Bayou may lift their protests. Mopac altered its plan to a lift type bridge with about 60 feet of vertical clearance. Warren Petroleum Co and Parker Bros said the new proposal sounds satisfactory, provided the bridge remains movable and does not hinder height for barges. The Sun attempted to contact Chambers County officials with no success Thursday.
