Baytown hosts its 17th Friends Serving Friends Thanksgiving Feast today from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Community Center on Market Street. About 500 volunteers helped last year and more than 3,000 meals were shared, funded entirely by contributions from locals and corporate donors.
About two dozen people including seven children remain at Bay Area Homeless Services shelter in Baytown on Thanksgiving. Executive Director Bill Eckert notes some will visit family or attend a Market Street luncheon, while the shelter serves a Thanksgiving meal with turkey and all the trimmings at day end. The holiday period typically increases shelter demand. Eckert says staying at the shelter offers meals, attention, case management, and contact with others in similar situations.
The Baytown Chamber of Commerce and Partners in Education program plus Goose Creek CISD led a record 99 365 Christmas cards for U S troops, nearly double 2012. Cards headed to Congressman Ted Poe s Operation Independence for shipment abroad with boxes packed by local groups and sponsors.
The Baytown Junior Forum sponsors the annual Goodfellows drive with support from Baytown residents to ensure no Baytown area child wakes up to an empty stocking on Christmas morning. Donations may be brought to the Baytown Sun or mailed to Goodfellows C/O BJF PO BOX 8116 Baytown TX 77522.
The Patient and Family Centered Care Advisory Council at Houston Methodist San Jacinto Hospital, active since October 2009, comprises 12 to 14 community members, hospital staff, and physicians. Members serve three year terms with February elections and up to three two-year chair terms. The group intends to boost service quality and patient satisfaction.
