Downtown merchants urged to decorate in An Old Fashioned Christmas theme. Three turkeys weekly will be given to shoppers with registration in downtown stores. winners announced in The Bay Town Sun.
The Baytown Woman's Club will convene at 2 p.m. Friday at the home of Mrs. John L. Woods Jr. 804 West Sterling.

Interior Secretary Rogers C Morton announced plans to lease federal lands in three Western states for commercial shale oil production. The action signals expanded development of energy resources on public lands.
A fast moving cold front triggered deadly tornadoes and floods across the Dixie region, killing at least three and injuring more than 100. Victims include 11 year old Antonia Forbes of Jackson Tennessee and 18 month old Donnie Ayers near La Follette Tennessee as homes and structures collapse and mobile parks flood. Tornadoes spanned southern Louisiana to northern Alabama and Tennessee, with damage at Southaven Mississippi and Huntsville Alabama, where the jetport area saw many injuries.
The school district will open bids at 4 p.m. Thursday for a gym at Horace Mann Junior School and a combined gymnasium and band hall at Baytown Junior School. Architect is Towel Lammers. This follows last June's contract for Sterling High School shops under the district’s $4.65 million program. Subsequent bids for additions at Robert E. Lee High and auditoriums at San Jacinto and Harlem Elementary are set for December 3.

The firm considers appealing a Texas Water Quality Board rejection urged by Harris County opponents and Crosby residents citing flood plain and environmental concerns.
Vice President designate Gerald R Ford wins 92 to 3 Senate backing amid civil rights and Vietnam war debates. House leaders expect swift confirmation by end of next week, with Ford calling himself darned happy. Senators praised Ford while nudging concerns about presidential impeachment and leadership.
A National Weather Service spokesman warns of a 37 degree low tonight in the Baytown area with frost possible. Tuesday night dipped into the low 40s, and a modest daytime warming trend is expected through Friday with no new cold fronts likely.

Ruth Ash, 56, Baytown resident, died Monday in a Baytown hospital. Funeral at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Earthman Funeral Home Chapel with Eld Raymond Lee and Harry Burns officiating. Burial in Cedar Crest Cemetery. She and husband Herman operated Ash Laundry and Cleaners and later Ash Brothers grocery. Survived by husband, Paul Ash. daughter Marilyn Fowler. sister Leola Holmes. brother Joe Burns. and other relatives.
