An early morning quake rattled Berkeley the UC seismographs recorded a 6.2 magnitude temblor. The center was estimated in Central America about 2,600 miles southeast of Berkeley and the event occurred at 6 42 a m EST. The quake was strong enough to cause damage in a populated area.
