Baytown could be forced to euthanize many stray animals after the Houston Humane Society said it would not renew its contract with the city pound. City Manager Gary Jackson conveyed the decision to the City Council, noting the long standing agreement will not continue. See Strays page 5.
Baytown City Council unanimously approves Jenkins Park as the site for the citys first skate park after earlier narrowing sites to Jenkins and Unidad parks. The plan involves renovating underutilized tennis courts at Jenkins Park to accommodate the facility.
A plan to convert Jenkins Park into a skateboard and rollerblade facility is proposed with an estimated cost of 21 680 dollars, about 110 000 dollars cheaper than constructing a new concrete slab at Unidad Park.
The Baytown Historical Preservation Association takes over the 1896 Wooster School and the 1910 Brown McKay House from the Bay Area Heritage Society. The two buildings, moved in 1988 to Republic of Texas Plaza, will open one Saturday monthly to the public, with ongoing care by Virginia Wingate and Rose Marie Thomson.
After a Monday discussion the Baytown City Council approved a policy allowing police to impound vehicles of drivers previously convicted of driving without liability insurance. The policy follows input from the Baytown Police Department and offers two options for impoundment during traffic stops.
