AFL-CIO Uses Wage Contests as Political Tool
The Cost of Living Council and AFL-CIO plan to use wage dispute actions to influence the Democratic presidential ticket against Nixon. Meany attacks the Pay Board over retroactive pay during the Slay freeze and a 5.5 percent cap. Nixon’s Construction Industry Stabilization Committee lifts a freeze, approving about 10 percent wage hikes for roughly 400 contracts. The 17 AFL-CIO construction unions claim their panel’s decisions are final, while Pay Board officials expect a possible clash over higher construction raises unseen by the board.
