A witness testifying in a capital murder case testified that drugs were involved in the Baytown killing of Brian Williams. He described arranging a marijuana deal between Williams and two Louisiana men, with the motive of repayment and profit. The defendant, Travis Conner, claimed he acted as middleman while Isler and Redd allegedly planned to steal marijuana rather than buy it. He stated Isler and Redd came to Baytown seeking weed and that Williams was killed during the incident.
The Baytown Junior Forum sponsored Goodfellows plans to distribute about 4000 toys this Christmas, up from 600 last year. Hundreds attended the first screening at Baytown Community Center as four sessions are scheduled at 2407 Market Street with dates including Tuesday 4 pm to 8 pm and December 2 and 4 from 9 am to 2 pm.
Lee College chose Dr. Michael Murphy as president after a tense search. Regent Wayne Gray announced the election with unanimous board support as the campus faced unexpected resignations, retirements, and Hurricane Ike damage earlier in the year.
Dennis Topper, longtime Lee College official, will assist during the presidential transition as Michael Murphy takes office. Although officially retired in August, Topper will help steer the institution through the change, with board members hopeful the 2009 period brings stability and a fresh leadership approach.
Baytown residents organize an inaugural Ike relief fundraiser aiming to raise 500000 through a Saturday hamburger lunch and a December 20 concert at Lee College Arena. Concert acts include Sam Sliva, Dennis Eichler and Bayou Big Band, Mean Gene Kelton, Cory Morrow. Tickets 15 general, 20 floor.
