Worst-Case Plan for Three No Trump Card Play
In a three no trump contract West leads a spade fourth highest and East overcalls with the jack. The plan aims for six top tricks: two spades and four diamonds. If West has a doubleton or singleton club ace or 3-3 clubs split, three club tricks may be won by leading to the dummy twice. East can thwart this by winning a club and returning a spade, helping West. The declarer should try to force East to lose the lead by playing a diamond to the board and a low heart. If East ducks the ace, a heart king shift to clubs yields two spades, one heart, four diamonds, and two clubs. If East rises with the heart ace, two spades, three hearts, and four diamonds are collected.
