The Baytown planning commission discusses a proposed ordinance setting a flat $10 filing fee for preliminary plats and $6 per acre for residential lots plus $15 per acre for reserve property. Commissioners debate goals and costs, with some noting fees won’t cover department expenses.
Regents will study the audit report before taking action at the December 9 meeting. Dr. Sam Hastings resigns as Lee College Foundation trustee and John P. Henderson is named to fill Hastings’ unexpired term. Board tours campus facilities and discusses building priorities including a bookstore and student union.
The Port of Houston Authority sold an additional $5 million in bonds to cover short-range improvements. Executive Port Director George Allwater reported the lowest bid of 4.5168 percent from Republic National Bank of Dallas. The $16 million program approved in 1967 will fund sewer improvements, yard enlargement, a new fireboat, and dust control systems at the grain elevator and other sites.
Campbell Soup Co reported it identified the bacteria source in Texas produced chicken vegetable soup last summer and has set corrective steps to prevent recurrence. A public hearing in Liberty was to be scheduled after information was submitted, with TWQH staff to make recommendations to the board.
County leaders back Judge Nelson in urging Baytown to buy the Spur 55 right of way and proceed with the proposed route from State Highway 146 in Baytown to Farm Road 1405 in West Chambers County. Officials warn funds may be diverted if purchase stalls. Completion cost nears 3 million dollars including right of way.
Crosby trustees approved five cent An hour raises for cafeteria workers from 1.60 to 1.65 and managers from 1.83 to 1.68. High school lunches rise 5 cents from 25 to 30 cents. A new electronic calculator for the tax office was also purchased. A separate burglary report notes an undetermined cash theft at a 7 11 on Williams.
The district plans for a several thousand acre real estate development could reverse population losses tied to integration troubles and accreditation issues. Trustees Spence and Luquette were absent from the meeting as the board continued business after a recessed session.
