Lee College approves its own business office amid World War II era notes. U S warships pound Viet Cong supply lines as local notices mix with weather, events, and community notices including retirements, church fundraisers, and student broadcasts.
Lee College plans to set up a separate business office moving the function from the school district. Regent approval came Thursday unanimously to operate the college business operations independently to gain efficiency. Dr. Richard Strahan cited an annual cost of 23 963 under the district and a projected 28 563 at the college with a new business manager. The new two year program will train mid management for supervisor or junior executive roles in business, meeting one night weekly for three hours for five semester hours. A nationwide shortage of qualified managers is noted as fueling demand across industries.
The Ross Sterling Stars plan a Surfing Safari precision routine at Friday night’s junior varsity game against Robert E. Lee. Directed by Mrs. Claire Heys, the 126 marchers will use miniature surf boards with a drum and trumpet corps encore featuring Wipe Out Surf City USA and Land of a Thousand Dances. The blue uniforms include two tone headbands as they perform a varied halftime program with past routines ranging from pom pon to live show business themes.
The Freshman-Sophomore Band and the Brigadiers will perform during halftime at Friday’s REL versus Ross Sterling JV game. Led by Charles Forque and Don Muery, Peggy Hill leads as drum major with twirlers Janice Lord Laura Massey Susan Kelly Debbie Hil creases Virginie Harrington Debbie Massey Georganne Jacobs. The drill mirrors Inter scholastic League competition with a fanfare and an eight to ten gate Lexington March finale.

Baytown Selective Service Board No 63 sent 158 inductees to the armed services in November a new record. The quota for December is set to drop to 14 with many awaiting physicals. Among the 138 this month twenty four residents were from Baytown with others from La Porte Galena Park Pasadena Deer Park Channelview and nearby towns. Names listed include John Kubelka Israel Holmes Dennis King Harold Crawford and others from Baytown and surrounding communities. DRAFT page 3.
Morrell Park Garden Club donated 400 toward Baytown Opportunity School building fund in observance of National Mental Retardation Week. The gift, raised at the club's Chuck Wagon Dinner, supports plans for a spring 1997 construction start on Baker Road. The drive is led by Rev. Bowler with gate kickoff on Jan 9 and aims to reach 50,000, to be matched by state and federal funds.

The Wagon Wheelers square dance at 8 p.m. Saturday will feature master of ceremonies Alex Bean. Hosts for the evening are Mr. and Mrs. Al Meraz, with the Knights of Pythias Hall as the venue.
Saigon reports 42 cargo boats destroyed or damaged by US destroyers John R. Craig and Hamner in a 10 mile North Viet Nam bombardment. The action, part of a campaign to curb seaborne supplies, followed heavy shelling and limited ground fighting across the region.
Baytown fans get extra recipes in The Sum on pages 8 and 9 in the regular edition. The Baytown Sun Friday magazine section titled Sugar and Spies and Everything Nice from Baytown's Kitchens is inserted for holiday planning just before Thanksgiving.
Capt James A Love, a 10 year Air Force veteran, returned to the U S after 12 months in Taiwan and Viet Nam where he helped move troops and supplies using a C 130 transport. He praised Vietnamese morale and thanked readers of The Baytown Sun sent by the Jaycees. His wife Carmel Sue and children Leah Dawn and Joy Lynn stayed with relatives during the leave and will join him at Webb Air Force Base to teach pilot training.
Houston Lighting and Power Co will build an electric generating station on 231 acres in Chambers County near Baytown, with 350 acres of right of way for a six mile condenser cooling canal to Trinity Bay. The site lies near Cedar Bayou and YM 1403, toward the northern U.S. Steel complex, and will be interconnected with HLPCO’s existing plants. Specific start and completion dates are not yet set.
Baytown reports rising auto crash totals surpassing last year with 1,130 by late November, four local fatalities and 180 major injuries amid a holiday season spike. Police note 60 accidents in first 15 days of November and project total climbs to about 1,356 for the year, with 534 noninjury crashes.
