Baytown welcomes the holiday season with Robson's Jewelers annual tree lighting ceremony on Saturday. Norman Hargrave, the store owner, has organized the event for 11 years, featuring a 51 foot tree at Garth and Baker roads plus caroling by First Baptist Church, face painting, and clowns.
Baytown planning and development director Greg Stubbs will resign in late December to become Deltona Florida's director of economic development. Stubbs, who started in October 2001, says family needs drive the move to a larger 85,000 strong city seeking downtown development and new industries. Deltona public information officer Wendy Jackson notes current lack of economic development and dining options. The Baytown Historical Museum received a 4200 grant to preserve the 69 year old mural titled Texas Progress located in the old Baytown post office at 220 W. Defoe. Project starts in spring with total cost about 8400 funded by the Texas Preservation Trust Fund. Museum Director Wanda Mitchell calls it a positive, treasure-worthy restoration for Baytown.
