Edward E. Altemus of 107 Caldwell appointed general supervisor of billing and mill accounting at U.S. Steel Texas Works. He replaces James B. Wager who transfers to Pittsburgh. A Bethlehem native, he earned a 1966 Penn State BS in accounting, is a CPA, and belongs to Texas and Houston CPA societies and the Baytown Jaycees. He and wife Dottie and daughter Carrie live in Baytown after moving from Johnstown, Pa.

An all white jury in Austin found Cain guilty of murder in the shooting of Rodriguez, a handcuffed Dallas service station burglary suspect. The panel rejected negligent homicide, sentencing ranges up to life for malice and two to five years for nonmalicious murder. Prosecutor Ruben Sandoval praised the verdict while defense argued for lighter consideration.
