Baytown approves smoking ban in public places

Baytown voters by large margin approve an ordinance banning smoking in all public places and buildings. With 83 percent of precincts reporting, results show strong support for a smoke free city as the council plans formal canvassing and a 10 day compliance window. Perry victory steadies Texas governorship amid third party run

Texas Governor Rick Perry won re election with about 40 percent of the vote just ahead of Democrat Chris Bell and independents Carole Keeton Strayhorn and Kinky Friedman. Reps return to Congress in Baytown district race

In the 29th District race Baytown area representative Gene Green, a Democrat, won re election with 73.6 percent of votes over Republican Eric Story and Libertarian Clifford Messina. Green, Houston based attorney and longtime state legislator, noted turnout appeared lower than expected.

Chambers County reelects Sylvia as Nelson cited Edmonds win

Chambers County Judge Jimmy Sylvia, a Republican, won a third full term by trouncing Len Hughes, an Anahuac businessman. Sylvia led with 74 percent of the vote with one precinct remaining, tallying 5,079 votes to Hughes’s. Sylvia first won office in 1993 as Pct. 3 County Commissioner. Further details follow on page 5.

Democrats challenge GOP for control of Congress

Democrats surged toward control of the House and gained Senate ground amid Iraq war discontent and domestic scandal. Nancy Pelosi, poised to be the first woman speaker, urged a new direction in Iraq as Democrats swept gubernatorial wins in New York, Ohio, and Massachusetts and added Colorado Maryland and Arkansas.
