The Lee and Sterling girls basketball teams opened the season Tuesday with losses. Lee fell to Rosenberg Lamar, while Sterling dropped a game to Clear Brook in a matchup slate.
With one week left in the regular season the District 21-5A football playoff picture is unclear. Teams jostle for seeds as remaining games determine final standings with several possible outcomes still on the board.
Thursday feature profiles show local children in need of mentors. Applicants should be men and women willing to guide about 35 youths. highlighted names include Betty Jo Chambers Risa Hartzog David Start Sr Jim Bob Harlin and Thomas Williams.
Baytown voters by large margin approve an ordinance banning smoking in all public places and buildings. With 83 percent of precincts reporting, results show strong support for a smoke free city as the council plans formal canvassing and a 10 day compliance window. Leaders praise the vote while opponents debate enforceability and loss of social venues.
Texas Governor Rick Perry won re election with about 40 percent of the vote just ahead of Democrat Chris Bell and independents Carole Keeton Strayhorn and Kinky Friedman. Perry claimed a four year term as the state’s longest serving governor, while about 60 percent voted for someone else. See Perry page.
In the 29th District race Baytown area representative Gene Green, a Democrat, won re election with 73.6 percent of votes over Republican Eric Story and Libertarian Clifford Messina. Green, Houston based attorney and longtime state legislator, noted turnout appeared lower than expected.
Chambers County Judge Jimmy Sylvia, a Republican, won a third full term by trouncing Len Hughes, an Anahuac businessman. Sylvia led with 74 percent of the vote with one precinct remaining, tallying 5,079 votes to Hughes’s. Sylvia first won office in 1993 as Pct. 3 County Commissioner. Further details follow on page 5.
Democrats surged toward control of the House and gained Senate ground amid Iraq war discontent and domestic scandal. Nancy Pelosi, poised to be the first woman speaker, urged a new direction in Iraq as Democrats swept gubernatorial wins in New York, Ohio, and Massachusetts and added Colorado Maryland and Arkansas. Bush watched returns from the White House and prepared to call Pelosi as the election shape shifts the final years of his presidency.
