LC Awards $87,000 Contract for IBM Mainframe Software

Lee College Board of Regents awarded an $87,000 contract to Information Associates of Plano for IBM mainframe computer programs to run the business office. The lone competing bid was $222,000 from a California firm. Officials aim for full IBM mainframe use by Sept. 1, 1987 and will extend Xerox maintenance through Nov. 1986 at $4,088 monthly.

Half of Texas aliens may qualify for amnesty under new law

In Austin federal officials say as many as 50 percent of the estimated one million illegal aliens in Texas could qualify for amnesty under the new immigration law. INS official John Abriel cites amnesty for those in the U.S. since Jan 1, 1982 while sanctions target employers hiring illegal workers. Legal centers to process applications may open in San Antonio Austin Corpus Christi and Laredo within six months.

Former LC students fare well after transfer

Lee College reported that 368 former students, via the Transfer Articulation Project, posted an average 2.82 GPA at four-year schools during 1885-86 after transferring. First semester 1925-26 GPA averaged 2.67, overall year 2.72. transfer students averaged 37.2 Lee College credit hours, with higher pre-transfer hours linked to greater success.

Jobless Rate Steady at 7 Percent as Jobs Grow

The Labor Department reports the household survey shows 349,000 jobs added after seasonal adjustments, offset by a 360,000 labor-force increase, keeping unemployment at 7.0 percent. Over the past year 2 million joined the labor force, about 75 percent of them women, while payrolls rose by 298,000 in October.

Mont Belvieu church relocates First Baptist after 57 years

First Baptist Church of Mont Belvieu will move from Barbers Hill to 10110 Eagle Drive after voting to accept a buyout from the Mont Belvieu Program. Construction on an 18,250 square foot facility is slated to begin Jan 12 with a celebration service at 11 a.m. led by Rev Tommy Green, a former pastor who helped build the brick church in 1955 56.
