Washington State University gains a 750000 endowment stemming from Stan Adler, a New York journalist and drama critic. Funds support a lifetime of care for Adler’s dog Penguin and cats Whitey and Barretta, plus veterinary research on horse and animal diseases per Adler’s will.

Chambers County Sheriff Doi Pounds says two stolen tractors valued at over 7000 dollars have been recovered in Liberty County and returned to owners. Leonard Singleton reported a 1200 dollar tractor stolen June 13 from a West Chambers hay field. A second 6000 dollar tractor was taken July 29 with mowing equipment by Alvin Otter. The gear was recovered with help from Constable J. W. Andress and Texas Ranger Johnnie Smith.
