Local soldier spends brief home visit before Iraq deployment
BAYTOWN Thanksgiving comes early at the Barnett home as 20 year old Specialist Mitchell West returns Friday from duty in Iraq for a family meal before flying to Fort Gordon Georgia Sunday night. He will return to Iraq on November 9 after serving since 2001 and says his decision followed family influence not only patriotism. West’s uncle served with the Marine Corps in Mogadishu during the 1992 94 humanitarian mission.

The City of Baytown moves the event to Bayland Island Waterfront Pavilion from 9 am to 5 pm, with free admission. The pavilion holds up to 50 booths, fewer than the community center, but organizers expect a strong crowd and holiday spirit. Vendors will offer candles, dolls, and woodwork, with some past exhibitors noted as broader craft sellers.
