The Lady Rangers hit a nine-game District 21-5A win streak and will begin the playoffs this week after a pair of losses in five days to district co-champion Channelview. Hassel reports on page 5A.
Three area football teams advanced to the playoffs with Baytown Sterling earning its first playoff berth since 1985 Goose Creek Memorial securing its first ever varsity win and Lee making the citys first televised game before a Friday showdown at Port Arthur for the final playoff berth in District 21-SA.
Anahuac and Lee remain in the hunt for Class 5A Division II and 4A playoffs after Friday results. Pearland clinched the 22 5A title with a 23 22 win over Channelview. Crosby earned 4A playoff spot with a 20 7 victory vs Galena Park. Goose Creek Memorial posted a 34 10 win over Ringwood Park, while Barbers Hill saw its chances end after a 36 15 loss to North Forest. Anahuac boosted its 2A playoff odds with a 53 0 beatdown of Warren and faces Buna in a likely title clash.
The City of Baytown Health Department led the eighth Baytown Recycles Day with fall cleanups by West Baytown and Central Heights associations. Volunteers gathered at Lowe's on Garth Road and Bergeron Park to remove items from vehicles into the afternoon, under the Litter Abatement and Keep Baytown Beautiful program, sponsored by Partners Against Litter including ExxonMobil Bayer Baytown Industrial Park Chevron Phillips Liberty Tire Recycling and The Baytown Sun.
Peggy Hemmenway recalls her son Phillip Ray Cottle Jr. known as Ray, a 21 year old who died of an accidental prescription drug overdose. Family noted medical and emotional problems and multiple doctors prescribed various drugs. Ray was a bright, musical young man who faced ongoing health issues.
Texas officials note rising nuclear power share as the South Texas Project STP near Bay City plans a five year expansion to double capacity by adding two new reactors. Local residents increasingly rely on nuclear energy for their monthly bills, with STP ownership shared by NRG Energy among others. The expansion would make Baytonians among the first Texans to double nuclear usage.
