Lynn A. Caskey II retained a seven vote victory over incumbent Ronnie Anderson in District 5 after a recount of May 13 results. A four member committee appointed by City Clerk Lorri Coody spent about two and a half hours recounting votes from five precincts and early voting.
Caskey defeated Anderson 400 votes to 393 in a June 8 election result with 50.44 percent to 49.56 percent. Anderson had petitioned for a recount in two precincts on May 25 and Caskey sought recounts in the remaining precincts days later. Coody reported nothing irregular in the original tally. Caskey, sworn in June 8 at Baytown City Hall, said he would have sought a recount if the result had favored Anderson. He noted the smoking ordinance debate as a campaign issue.
School may be out for summer but local groups offer activities. Sterling Municipal Library starts today and runs until August 11, while Crosby Library began Tuesday with 10:30 a.m. sessions every Tuesday and Thursday through July 29.

Charles McManus, principal of Barbers Hill Primary School, prepares to leave his post after 18 years. He plans to move to Second Baptist School in Houston as director of student services while continuing to influence students through his education philosophy.
Barbers Hill ISD board adopted a strict residency policy requiring students to live within the district to attend its schools. Superintendent Greg Poole noted ongoing admissions by nonresidents and tax nonparticipation under the former lenient approach, declaring the issue now manageable and the policy necessary to enforce.
