Allied forces pushed two miles on Korea’s east central front while rain and mud slowed the push against Chinese Communist troops. UN bases Chorwon and Kumhwa reached artillery range but not yet fired. Inje area fights concluded a five hour battle as Reds tried to keep trails open. On the west front heavy artillery and MiG-15s challenged B-29 missions and Sabres, with two MiGs shot down. Ground fighting formed a defensive line six to 12 miles north of the 36th Parallel as both sides regrouped for the next action.
US Sabre jets shot down two MiG-15s and damaged another during a dogfight over northwest Korea while escorting B-29s on a bombing run to Chongju railway bridge. First Lieutenants Bobbie J. Smith and Otis Gordon shared credit for downing one fighter. Smith described engaging the lead MiG and scoring multiple hits as Gordon finished it off.
United Press reports Americans marked Memorial Day with unusually low highway deaths. A total of 123 people died in 6 pm Tuesday to midnight last night across highways, drownings, and other mishaps, the lowest holiday toll since World War I.
House Speaker Sam Rayburn urged rapid House action to grant states title to tidelands off Texas and other coasts. He backed a 10 percent revenue share and argued the land should belong to the states despite Supreme Court and federal control. A Senate panel recently rejected a similar measure, while debate continues on admin and trust arrangements.

A catastrophic blast trapped 34 miners at a German mine as rescue teams halted operations in Dortmund due to danger. Twenty injured were hospitalized before rescues ended, the fire fight triggered the blast, following a deadly incident at Basington Colliery two days earlier.
A 36 year old mother of five, Dorothy Caldwell, says neighbors beat her for nearly an hour for neglecting her five year old spastic son. She alleges horsewhipping, stomping, fists and a whip in the front yard of her three room cottage. The boy was placed in Abilene State Hospital after the incident.
The Defense Department reports 67 427 American battle casualties in heavy combat abroad. The tally includes 13 413 deaths and 44 705 wounded with further 9 987 missing and 1 207 who returned to duty. Army leads with 9 487 dead and 36 126 wounded. Navy 115 dead, 535 wounded, 67 missing. Marine Corps 1 636 dead, 2 018 wounded. Air Force 17 dead, 26 wounded, 369 missing.
