Memorial Day origins and date debate in U S history
Memorial Day began as Decoration Day in 1868 after Gen. John Logan proclaimed it in General Order No 11 and first observed at Arlington. The date was fixed on May 30, later debated as three day weekends reduce meaning. Veterans groups push returning to May 30. Senator Inouye has sponsored measures since 1998.
