Dr Donald L Brunson returns home from Houston Methodist Hospital declaring a 100 percent recovery. U S bone marrow specialist Dr. Robert P. Gale says the Chernobyl death toll has reached 23 as about 55 hospitalized in Moscow remain in serious condition with 14 critical cases. He plans a Ukraine trip to examine victims and develop lifelong care. Radio Moscow says four reactor units north of Kiev may resume operation by year end.
In a one day Austin gathering Speaker Gib Lewis leads 149 Texas House members to hear first hand about a 1.3 billion shortfall. He says an overall state analysis is needed to prepare for the next session and update on House Bill 72 amid ongoing budget concerns.
Baytown officials kick off the six month season with a public information plan led by Baytown Office of Emergency Management coordinator Fletcher Hickerson. A hurricane awareness meeting set for July 15 at 7 30 p m at the Baytown Community Building features Ronald P Stagno of the Houston Area Weather Service as main speaker. The report notes August and September as peak months and highlights the need for elevation data in flood prone areas. Harris County is negotiating with Wayne Smith for preliminary design of Bush Road in Baytown. The nearly mile long two lane street would be widened to four lanes with curbs gutters and storm sewer. Project funding depends on bond program remaining funds and preliminary design cost estimates.

A group of Baytown citizens filed a federal lawsuit challenging the at large City Council election method, arguing it violates the First and Fourteenth Amendments and the Voting Rights Act. The suit seeks single-member districts to boost minority representation, noting minorities comprise about 25 percent of Baytown's population despite no Black or Hispanic council members. Trial, originally set for June, was postponed to August by agreement.
