Texas House Rejects Tax Plan Amid Hot Session
The Texas House romped and roared as Speaker James Turman cast the deciding vote to kill a Senate-approved 342 million revenue package built on sales taxes. A late 2.6 billion appropriations bill and an 810 dollar teachers pay raise were approved by the Senate before midnight, leaving crucial tax and school funding issues for a special session. Gov. Price Daniel pledged a start from scratch, citing a 62 million deficit and unresolved needs including taxes, spending, and teacher raises.
