School Board Keeps Carver Name After Protest
About 150 demonstrators picketed the School Administration Building as the board voted to retain the George Washington Carver name for the elementary school next fall. Trustees reversed their April decision to rename the school Anson Jones, opting for a compromise by pronouncing the Carver name with a respectful blend of the two names. The action followed a petition of over 400 signers presented by Wooden Lewis and Billy Solomon, who urged keeping the Carver name and pressured for integration measures, including more Negro teachers and a counselor in each high school. A meeting was planned in McNair to discuss the action amid continued dissent.
