Navy Begins Inquiry Fire Breaks Out Near Stricken Carrier

Navy launches special board of inquiry as flames sparked on a pier beside the Bennington while 201 injured, one later said to be in hospitals. Initial reports shifted from carrier fire to rubbish on deck as the board convenes to probe sabotage claims, with Capt Raborn and Rear Adm Hoskins leading the inquiry amid other investigations.

22-Foot Fall Is Fatal For Houston Man

A Houston construction worker, John Crosby Patterson, 61, died after falling 22 feet from a cooling tower at a Bay town Refinery project. He died at 1 56 p m after three hours of unsuccessful recovery at a Bayolwn hospital. Burial planned in Bastrop cemetery. Survivors include his widow Viola, two sons Joe and Arnold, daughter Clifton Monroe, four grandchildren, three brothers Archie Raymond and Parker, and sister Eva Doyle.

Bob Barfield Slated To Join Baylor Staff

Coach Bob Barfield is reported to join Baylor University as head freshman coach of football and track. The move, discussed in Houston, would likely promote Sam Boyd to the varsity. Barfield previously led Cedar Bayou and recently took a similar role at Webster. Jerry Marcontel, a famed Bear athlete, signed with Baylor and will enroll next year aiding Barfield’s first team.

Big Oil Well Fire Set To Save Lives

Washington reports that Senate Republican Leader Knowland predicts Congress can wind up and adjourn by July 31 if Democrats cooperate while Lyndon B. High National Honor Won By REL Students

Cedar Bayou Teens Win Regional Driving Event At Houston

Tillman O'Brien Jr. of Norace Mann and Tommy Lochridge of Cedar Bayou School won regional teen age road test trials in Houston with Lochridge scoring 334 points and O'Brien 306. The competition advances to state and then national in Washington DC with hundreds of students from area schools. Steve Franco of Baytown Junior High placed third in the Baytown event held at a Houston public school stadium.

Senator McClellan accuses McCarthy of crimes in hearings

In a heated Army McCarthy dispute session on May 27 Senator John L McClellan a Democrat from Arkansas charged Senator Joseph R McCarthy and a donor with obtaining secret information through criminal means Both men were accused of crimes over confidential Army documents during the ongoing hearings. Roy M Cohn testified for McCarthy and noted a March 1953 document on Communism in the Army. Cohn and McCarthy aides delayed as Coln consulted with McCarthy. The memo by Paul Crouch a former Communist leader was identified as the author and Coln said Crouch now works for the US Immigration Service.

Take Off From Fort Worth A-Bombers To Nicaragua

UNITED PRESS reports three engine B 36 bombers roared from Carswell Air Force Base in Fort Worth Texas on a goodwill flight to Nicaragua. Brig Gen John D Ryan led the formation with two follow planes at eight minute intervals. The non stop flight was to last about seventeen and a half hours with limited time over Nicaragua. Defence officials said the mission commemorates Nicaragua army day and involves no landings. Recent arms airlifts linked to regional tensions followed Guatemala receiving Soviet arms and MiG 15 jets from Europe and other reports from Mexican exiles about additional shipments.

Grand Jury To Report On Insurance Frauds

AUSTIN May 2 UP The Travis county grand jury prepared to report on its four day inquiry into alleged fraud and malpractice by insurance firms. Key witness Paul Key of Southwest National Bank El Paso testified while officials of two defunct companies declined to appear. Attorney General Sheppard attended sessions and will join investigations in Houston Beaumont and El Paso as the term nears its close.

Park Meters Planned For West Pearce Park

Eighteen parking meters are planned for West Pearce Park in the block between Pruett and West Menrer. Police Chief H A MolKee said the meters will likely be in operation by Saturday and no later than Monday.
