Memorial Day observances across Baytown Crosby and Anahuac

Memorial Day events occur across the area starting at 11 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Plaza Baytown with a guest speaker posting of the colors and a wreath ceremony while residents are invited to bring wreaths. An earlier 10 a.m. program at Sterling White Funeral Home Highlands features a wreath placement and remarks by Harris County Commissioner Sylvia Garcia plus taps bagpipes a dove release and aerial flyover. Crosby merges its observances with Fourth of July activities for hundreds of veterans. Anahuac hosts a 2 p.m. ceremony at Freeman-South American Legion Post 104 honoring all veterans in front of the new Chambers County Veterans Memorial. Palms Memorial Park Dayton will host Frank Jordan and Karla Burris at 11 a.m. with an aerial flyover at 602 1/2 N Main Street.

Baytown honors fallen soldiers with 1500 flags

Baytown veterans place 1500 flags on local graves to honor those who sacrificed their lives. Volunteers from VFW Post 912 and other groups cover three cemeteries to ensure every veteran’s grave is flagged. Commander Jay Sanders notes Memorial Day honors the fallen, distinct from Veterans Day. See flags page 9.

Joe Allen 1940 2008 Baytown Rep Who Served Texas House

Rep. Joe Allen of Baytown and Precinct 13 died at 68 from Alzheimer's complications. A Army veteran, he served in the Texas House from 1966 to 1979 and helped craft the Red Drum Conservation Act and Brownwood subsidence fixes. Friends recall his active public life and desire to improve the state and community.

Hurricane/Severe Weather Town Hall meetings set in Chambers County

Chambers County hosts three free town hall sessions on hurricane safety with the National Weather Service and local emergency officials. Attendees can learn to prepare plans before storms, with meetings at Anahuac American Legion Hall on Main Street, the Cove Community Building, and Winnie Community Building on June 17, all starting at 7 PM.
