Memorial Day Observances Revitalize Local American Legion Post
The Baytown area honors veterans with two Memorial Day ceremonies. Post 104, once dwindling to three members, has added 40 new members since January, many Vietnam era veterans, and refreshed by 9/11 and camaraderie. The day includes grave flags, speeches by VFW leaders, bagpipes, WWII vehicle displays, and a flag folding demo.

Texas Hurricane of 1943 Reaches Houston and Beaumont
The 1943 hurricane struck with eye over downtown Houston as winds gusted to 132 mph and sustained 85 mph for over two hours. Beaumont Port Arthur area saw the worst flooding while refineries in Houston faced damage leading to temporary shutdowns at Humble Oil Baytown and Shell Oil Deer Park to protect war efforts. An FBI telegraph shutdown was reported in La Porte to limit battlefield damage news. Col Joe Duckworth and Lt Ralph O Hair flew into the hurricane eye at Bryan Field to showcase the AT 6 Texan trainer, a first practice now standard in storm monitoring, marking O Hair’s final hurricane flight.

Lynchburg Ferry to Undergo Major Repairs in Harris County
In April the Harris County Commissioners' court approved funds for ferry improvements. Repairs to the boats will cost 269100 dollars and landings 560900 dollars. Commissioner Garcia noted both projects run concurrently to shorten ferry downtime. The Lynchburg Ferry began in 1822 as a hand pulled flatboat service on a main land route to the Mexican border, and now ferries nearly 1000 vehicles daily.
