Solar powered lights aid mariners along coast guard ops
Coast Guard engineers in Florida install a sun powered beacon seven miles off Key Largo to guide ships and reduce maintenance. The system uses solar panels, nickel cadmium batteries, and a car headlight lamp to create a 15 mile visible light. Officials plan further expansion from Charleston to Port Myers as part of a coast guard energy effort.
