Supreme Court voids 1962 Communist mail rule
The Supreme Court struck down in one day a 1962 law allowing the Post Office to hold up Communist mail unless the addressee requests delivery. Justice Douglas ruled the delivery-reply requirement violates the First Amendment, creating an unconstitutional burden on addressees and deterring those in sensitive positions. Justice White did not participate.
