Carpenter Returns From Three Orbit Flight Test
Navy Lieutenant Commander Carpenter completes three orbits aboard Aurora 7. He reported a large inflated balloon ejected during the final phase and photographed it. The test aims to study color visibility and aid color choices for future spacecraft rendezvous while in weightless flight. Carpenter planned to release a multicolored balloon and plastic contents to test color depth, as John Glenn’s earlier orbital flight continues to influence excitement in Cape Canaveral.

Atlas rocket Aurora 7 mission launches from Cape Canaveral
The Atlas rocket rose at 7 45 am EST after a 434 minute delay due to ground haze. Astronaut Carpenter reported capsule readings as in good condition and manual controls ready as Aurora 7 entered orbit for a planned three orbits. Ground stations tracked the capsule through day night passes and the return plan involved parachute deployment into the Atlantic near Grand Turk Island after a three orbit mission.
