Washington Briefs on Debt and Wage Policy
In Washington the Treasury may ask Congress to lift the debt ceiling to 320 billion or more for the new fiscal year starting July 1. The current temporary limit is 315 billion but will drop to 308 billion on June 30 if Congress does not act, with the permanent ceiling at 285 billion. The national debt stands at 308.2 billion. The AFL CIO criticized Johnson’s wage price appeal, urging restraint only in a national emergency with profits limits. A House subcommittee heard that unnecessary government reports can cost small businesses 3000 to 5000 dollars annually, per National Federation for Independent Business testimony by George J. Burger.
