Merchant ship sinks near Iranian island

The 17,000 ton bulk carrier Fidelity, Panamanian registry but Greek-flagged, sank in the Persian Gulf southwest of Kharg Island after a likely attack by Iraqi warplanes. Twenty one crew rescued, twelve escaped in lifeboats. earlier signals indicated the vessel was ablaze. A Spanish supertanker reportedly escaped an attack near Kharg as Iran-based shipping sources described multiple strikes.

Rain Expected Across Gulf Coast as System Lingers

Rain and thunder woke Baytonians as a low pressure system from West Texas moves east over the Gulf Coast. National Weather Service forecaster Jack Stewart says showers will continue today with heavy bursts, tapering tonight and ending around midday Sunday. An 80 percent rain chance today, 60 percent at night, 40 percent Sunday. about two inches expected overall. The Baytown station logged .55 inches so far.

Baytown Weather Forecast Shows Rain Through Sunday

Rain will continue across the Baytown area through Sunday with an 80 percent chance Saturday, 60 percent at night, and 40 percent on Sunday. Temperatures stay in the upper 70s Saturday, drop to the mid 60s at night, and rise to the low 80s Sunday. Baytown reported a Friday high of 66 and an 80 degree high, with .55 inches of rain by 8 a.m. Saturday.

Planners mull two proposed subdivisions in Baytown

Baytown Planning Commission will consider preliminary approval for Brightwood a 141 lot planned unit development on 25.7 acres near Highway 146 and Massey Tompkins Road and Roving Meadows Section One a 47 lot 19.5 acre subdivision off Farm to Market Road 1942 north of Barbers Hill Road. Both meet minimum requirements with a homeowners association to maintain outdoor living areas and drainage. Barkaloo Townhomes a 309 lot 60 acre project between Massey Tompkins and Lynchburg Cedar Bayou roads also seeks preliminary approval. The commission will also weigh changes to final plot requirements for commercial developments. Meeting at City Hall 2401 Market at 7 p.m. Monday.
