Baytown area teachers were recognized at a Tuesday banquet as the 2004 Teachers Excellence Awards, with 31 educators from Goose Creek Barbers Hill Baytown Christian Academy and St. school districts receiving $1,000 each from Southwest Bank of Texas and The Baytown Sun. The event highlighted the high costs educators bear for supplies and student needs.
Baytown officials marked progress to restore Goat Island in the Houston Ship Channel area between Burnet and Crystal bays. Dignitaries, including outgoing Mayor Pete Alfaro and Mayor-elect Calvin Mundinger, praised the project as a legacy notable for the city and region.

Baytown residents report gas costs rising with national average topping $2 per gallon for the first time. A local family planned a cross country trip but says high prices make it unlikely, noting prices in Baytown ranged roughly from 1.79 to 1.89 per gallon.
After provisional ballots were tallied, JF Steadham held a three vote lead over Robert Smith to win the Old River Winfree City Council seat. Final tally 99 to 96, with Saturday’s count at 95 to 92 and eight provisional ballots deemed valid. Steadham, 60, was the sole winner among candidates.
