Army marks debt unpaid for Vietnam veteran Haley
Michael Haley, a 23 year old Vietnam veteran from Champaign Hill, faces a $3,724.99 debt after military pay errors and administrative delays. The Army adjusted his status from excess leave to authorized absence, then AWOL during a blackout, and later found pay errors from Chanute Air Force Base and erroneous promotion orders. Citizens in his hometown organize a fundraiser as Haley begins paying the balance before his June discharge.
