Government Misces On Mosquito Probe

Washington AP report shows the federal government spent 53 million dollars over five years to stamp out a yellow fever carrying mosquito, then decided the insect was not a major threat and could not be eradicated. The program grew from 3 million in 1964 to 16.5 million in 1968, with 300 federal staff at peak. Although no US yellow fever cases occurred in 40 years, the effort aimed to curb migration of Aedes Aegypti to Latin America and aid South and Central America commitments.
