Houston AP reports a modest rise in fuel efficiency for standard autos with a forecasted gradual drop for American-made small cars. DuPont analyst Merkel told the API Refining Division that gains from higher compression and nearer saturation in automatic transmissions boost efficiency, while consumer demand for power accessories and larger engines temper small car gains. Foreign small cars may hold at about 28 mpg as sizes and power rise for the U.S. market.
