With two unofficial votes ahead Lena Yepez leads Mercedes Renteria in District 1 for Baytown City Council. A provisional ballot and an overseas ballot remain uncounted as the Harris County ballot board resumes Friday to tally 12 provisional votes and a mail-in ballot. The overseas ballot must arrive by business today to count. Both candidates can request a recount by 5 p.m. May 24 after council canvass.
Sterling High School physics teacher Julie McReynolds was named Goose Creek secondary teacher of the year, sharing district honors with Patty Russell of Crockett Elementary. Principal Trey Kraemer praised McReynolds for simplifying complex material and shaping students through hands on projects and AP physics work.
Officers nationwide paid respects this week in the first ceremony of Officer Memorial Week. In Washington 382 names of officers who sacrificed their lives in the past year were read, including 12 Texas officers. The Baytown Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Service will honor them on SEE MEMORIAL PAGE 8A.
Proponents of Proposition 1 aim to boost turnout in City Council Districts 1 and 2 if a new smoking proposal reaches the November ballot. In the May 12 election, Prop 1 carried in four Harris and Chambers County precincts, all within districts represented by Scott Sheley and Mercedes Renteria, despite a Baytown vote against it. Harris County precincts 99, 100, 102 and 248 favored Prop 1 53.7 to 46.7 percent, with 964 total votes across those districts. Both councilmen have signed a pledge to oppose city charter amendments aligned with the state measure.
The 175th Battle of Anahuac celebration in Anahuac will feature a Beard Contest and a Costume Contest on June 9. Trophies will crown winners as locals and visitors turn out in period dress and march in a parade beginning at 9 a.m. from the Chambers County Courthouse.
