Cooper’s Moon Trip Pace Hailed After Space Return
Astronaut Gordon Cooper, 36, felt woozy for about 15 seconds after landing aboard the USS Kearsarge but quickly recovered. Doctors called his condition normal and said tests will continue before he flies to Honolulu for a parade and reception. The mission tested how a one day orbital flight affects a astronaut and confirmed coordination for longer space operations. Cooper’s smooth descent contrasted with Soviet orbital lengths, who kept private condition details of their cosmonauts. President Kennedy offered congratulations from Oklahoma.
