Supreme Court curbs one man grand jury in contempt ruling
The Supreme Court ruled six to three that Michigan judges acting as a one man grand jury cannot punish witnesses as contempt. The decision did not declare the practice unconstitutional but found due process violation in a Detroit police corruption inquiry. In a separate action, three Cleveland Press staffers were convicted of contempt for photographing a courtroom proceeding, with fines upheld.
