Dickinson Texas May 17 Ray Allen Jr awoke with a stinging arm sensation. A .38 caliber slug had broken through a wall and split in two hitting a pocket and a nail before landing on the bed pillow.
Humble Day drew 15 337 attendees on Saturday at the Humble Community grounds for Baytown refinery employees annual picnic. Eleven rides and cartoons entertained children while 1 000-plus took bus tours of the refinery. One accident occurred when a concrete table pinned a 10 year old girl and a 62 year old man. the girl Elizabeth Dabney Heard underwent leg surgery and the man Grover K Edge walked on crutches.
Cadillac driven by Robert W Harper veered off Market Street Road between Wooster and Baytown after a blinded car blocked the road at 1 15 a m Sunday. The Harpers escaped with minor injuries as their car rolled over. Deputy Sheriff Earl Easley investigated.
Senator Joseph R. McCarthy accused President Eisenhower of building an iron curtain around the Army McCarthy hearings and said he would not press questions until a closed session decides on the order. He demanded to know who arranged the charges at a January 21 Justice Department meeting. The White House ordered 101 government employees to discuss executive branch conversations with investigators, while Attorney General Brownell refused to disclose McCarthy's FBI letter.
Rep Emanuel Celler proposed a bill to ban commercial sponsorship of television and radio coverage of congressional hearings. He referenced the Amy McCarthy hearing and urged keeping vaudeville out of coverage.

Survivors include widow Pearl Jones a daughter Chandur Jones sons Billy and Donny Earl Jones and his parents. Funeral services were held at First Baptist Highlands with Rev Dennis Barnes officiating.
Superintendent George H. Gentry reviews a $660,000 bond plan to add classrooms, a Lakewood school, and other facilities amid potential petitions from patrons to add bond proposals to the June 1 election. A five cent tax increase is projected for next year to support repayment, with notices to be posted 10 days before the vote.
City crews at Roseland Park pool search for a major leak after a swampy area formed around the facility. City Manager C D Middleton said the leak may be in a water line or the pool itself and will not delay the planned May 20 public opening. Walter W Brawn will manage. private parties may book between now and May 29.
Tuesday marks the second round of polio vaccine shots for 444 Baytown second graders in the nationwide Salk trial. Children will receive the same inoculation process as last week at the same clinics. Dr H H Duke heads the effort under East Harris County Medical Society with Dr Liz Dev Farengut noting the second and third shots are essential. Blood samples will be drawn again from participating students. Schools involved include Lamar Anson Jones San Jacinto Burnet Carver Cedar Bayou Asher Smith Highlands and Baytown elementary, with assignments by grade and location for Negro students at Carver.
A series of squall lines and thunderheads battered Dalhart with hail up to one inch and more than two inches of rain, sparking twister alerts for West Texas and New Mexico. Six tornadoes were reported in New Mexico near the Texas border and in Oklahoma, with other storms spilling heavy rain as far east as North and West Central Texas. Forecasters warned more heavy rains may follow in North Texas as instability lines move eastward from the Rockies.
Baytown Optimists hosted a charter night dinner in Humble dining room at 4 pm Monday. Col Fd Stolle of St. Louis, Optimist International official, will present the charter to President Wilton A. Roper. Senator Searcy Bracewell of Houston will be principal speaker. The program features 4 xeries by Baytown youths John Chandler, Danlesa Nunez and Aubrey Richardson. Over 200 people are expected, including 30 Optimists and wives from Southeast Texas and Louisiana. Frank Mendell of Houston will be master of ceremonies. District Governor Dad Wise and District Governor-elect Dr L B Rosenblad will attend.

Multiple cases from South Carolina, Virginia, Delaware, and Kansas were consolidated. The decision marks a sweeping victory for civil rights, linking the prohibition to equal protection of the laws and signaling far-reaching changes in education policy.
In Dallas area a green 1954 Mercury sedan driven by two men tied to a Louisiana deputy’s killing charged through Northwest Highway at dawn. Police pursued at high speed but the suspects vanished into country roads near Garland. A witness and officers linked the car to the Mansfield, Louisiana case, where a deputy was killed and another wounded. Police cautioned the stolen vehicle may be involved, with authorities tracing the car to Carthage, Texas.
Mrs Laila J Clark 79 died at 1 am Sunday at her Lakeview Drive home in Four Corners. Funeral services at 4:30 pm Tuesday at Earthman chapel Houston with Rev Beaver Smoot and Rev Kenneth Trent. Burial San Jacinto Memorial Park Cemetery. Survivors include four daughters Lillian Dunderdale H H West of Pour Corners and others, two sons James F Clark and Loody Clark, plus 42 grandchildren and 41 great grandchildren.
