The Barbers Hill Eagles meet Brenham in a best of three Class 4A regional quarterfinal series in Katy with games scheduled for Thursday and Friday. The matchup lands in Katy as both teams vie for advance in the regional bracket.
Baytown hosts Armed Forces Day events on Texas Avenue with a military themed benefit for a local artist in the 300 block and an art reception. The 100 block features the Art League of Baytown open all day showcasing about 50 Face Off Mask Contest entries at the Art Center on 110 West Texas.
Architecture students from the University of Houston present plans for a southern Baytown waterfront featuring entertainment, theaters, retail, and hotels to attract tourists. Three student teams aim to grow the area as an economic hub while preserving green space for recreation and linking to Cedar Bayou. Professor Susan Rogers introduced the project to the Baytown city council and led the workshop at city hall.
J Fletcher Hickerson, longtime Baytown emergency management coordinator, died Sunday at age 99. He began part time in 1963 as civil defense coordinator while also serving as foreman of Humble Oil refinery chemical laboratory. He retired from ExxonMobil in 1974 and from city service in 1991 after 29 years. He recalled how civil defense evolved from wartime prep to broader emergency work, citing the 1947 Texas City disaster. See Hickerson page 9.
