Baytown Street Tax Start and End Dates Revealed
If approved the street maintenance sales tax would begin at retailers on Oct 1 with first city revenue in December 2004. The tax would expire Sept 30, 2008 unless voters reauthorize every four years as required by state law.
Baytown considers street tax options and PCI based repairs
The 2001 and 2003 legislative changes allow a city to levy up to a quarter or eighth percent sales tax for street maintenance with voter approval every four years. Revenue estimates place the quarterly tax around 1.5 million yearly, with 40 percent paid by nonresidents. Baytown reports 274 miles of streets, PCI 65 on a 40-100 scale, and notes bond programs targeting PCI below 55, plus 2004 phases costing 8 million reconstructing 4.6 miles while overall maintenance remains limited to pothole and small-segment repairs.
