After Tuesday rains the city Little League tournament began on Wednesday. Thirty-two Baytown teams compete over five days to determine city supremacy with results reported on PAGE 1B.
Baytown area law enforcement and residents plan a noon Friday memorial at the San Jacinto Mall to honor officers who died in the line of duty this year. The National Memorial Fund notes 145 officers died in 2003 with Texas accounting for ten, including 51 shot, 13 automobile incidents outside vehicles, 11 motorcycle deaths, six illnesses, four drownings and two beatings.
In Goose Creek ISD a fifth grader from Austin Elementary sang at the annual teachers of the year ceremony. Becky Eckerman of Austin is named elementary teacher of the year, while Gordon Blue of Lee High School earns secondary honors. Eckerman retires after 30 years teaching kindergarten as the district celebrates 27 honorees chosen by peers.
Baytown City Council District 6 candidate Sammy Mahan explains back taxes totaling over 35,000 owed to Lee College and Goose Creek school district stem from 1984 on a vacant lot at 414 West Main St. Goose Creek seized the parcel amid a dispute tied to a bank’s clouded deed and illegal gas tanks discovered after clearing the site. Goose Creek seeks sale to settle taxes, which could erase Mahan’s owed amounts if the land sells.
The Sun runs an unscientific poll asking Baytown readers whether The Snake, the curved section of Texas Avenue created in 1974 to slow traffic and boost shopping, should stay serpentine or be straightened. Readers can vote by email or online, with results printed in Sunday’s edition.
Dozens of young contestants vied for top honors at the Baytown Youth Fair and Livestock Show Swine Show held at the Baytown Fairgrounds. Judge Edward Schneider evaluated muscle expression body depth and showmanship while handlers urged their pigs with whips and, at times, disciplined guidance. One exhibitor noted Lucy the pig’s persistent effort to exit the ring, contributing to a seventh place in her weight class. Donnie White, president of the Baytown Youth Fair and Livestock Show, oversaw the event proceedings.
